Dear Candidate,

Thank you for your interest in the role of Chief Executive of Cafcass.

As the largest children’s social care employer in England, Cafcass has a unique national role and profile, with a responsibility to give a voice to each of the circa 135,000 children and young people whose case comes before a family court in England every year.

The children (and families) we work with are amongst the most vulnerable in society. Each child has their own story and most need their world to be changed for the better. Understanding that story and helping them to achieve that change, to overcome adversity and to be able to live happy and fulfilling lives, is our core business.

We are an ‘Outstanding’ organisation, as judged by Ofsted in its 2018 national inspection of Cafcass. This is testament to the hard-work and professional skill of our entire workforce and to our determination to continually improve; and to aim to be consistently outstanding in all that we do for children and young people.

We have achieved a great deal, but there is much more to do and Cafcass must continue to grow, to innovate and develop; playing its part, as it does so, in helping to shape the wider family justice and child care systems in England.  At the same time, stability is key.  There is no current requirement for wholesale change or radical revision of working practices, and our new Chief Executive will have the skill and the foresight to achieve the necessary balance, in order to consolidate and build upon the progress we have made.

A unique organisation, with such aspirations, requires a unique individual at the helm. Our Chief Executive must be an inspirational leader, with presence and an ability to influence both within and outside of the organisation.

We have a strong value base in Cafcass. Our technology, health and wellbeing support for staff, approach to talent-management, learning and development programmes and flexible working practices are sector-leading and predicated on the needs of our workforce and the requirements for effective service delivery. Our trust-based model supports and encourages devolved leadership and management wherever possible and appropriate. Our Board is fully committed to ensuring that Cafcass has a clear strategic direction and works hard to support and to challenge the Executive in equal measure, to add value to the performance of the organisation wherever it can.

We are immensely proud of our journey as an organisation to this point.  We hope that you will take the time to read the various documents and information on this site, which will help you to further understand where we have come from, what we have achieved, and what more there is to do to get us to the next stage.

Please familiarise yourself with the Success Profile for the Chief Executive Officer role, and if you believe that you are the person to take Cafcass forward, as the figurehead of an organisation that is at the forefront of innovation in the family justice system, then we look forward to receiving your application.
