Cafcass stands for Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service and we represent children in public and private family court cases in England.

We make sure that children's voices are heard and decisions are taken in their best interests.  We achieve this by working with children and their families, and then advise the courts on what we consider to be in the best interests of children.

Our duty is to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, putting their needs, wishes and feelings first and ensuring their voice is heard at the heart of the family court setting.

We are independent of the courts, social services, education, health authorities and all similar agencies.

Cafcass may be asked by the court to work with families in three main areas:

  • Divorce and separation
  • Care proceedings
  • Adoption

We are the largest single employer of social workers in the UK. The vast majority of our staff are frontline and all our corporate support services are focused on delivering the best possible service for our practitioners and the children and families we work with.

Our 2017-18 Annual Report sets out our performance and most recent key achievements.

Our Operating Framework sets out how we approach all aspects of our practice and corporate support services.

At the root of all our development strategies is regular supervision and Performance and Learning Reviews. You help identify your own development needs and we have a range of tools in place to support you in addressing these.

Also, through our online learning platform, you can access a range of materials at any time.  There are modules on a range of topics, from social work practice, to management theory and personal development.  Our National Improvement Service and HR teams also run a range of workshops and events, allowing all staff to develop core competencies.

We’ve also developed a Cafcass Coaching Skills programme which combines eLearning with real-life practice. We recognise that some learning is best done one to one, so we have a network of coaches and mentors that can really support your development.
